The Fredericksburg Sister City Association, Inc. celebrates its 30th anniversary as sister city with Fréjus, France, with a fabulous French Market of over 30 vendors and the cooking of a Giant Omelet (5,000 eggs) for all to share.

l’Omelette Géante

Returning from France ... Chevaliers(chefs) from our Sister City, Frejus, France, will be here to prepare a Virginia-style omelet big enough to feed a village. Local Honorary Chevaliers will help.

The recipe includes five thousand eggs, fifty-two pounds of butter, four gallons of chopped onions, a pound of pepper, and twenty pounds of a special Virginia ingredient to "kick it up" a bit .
A hundred large loaves of bread (French of course) will be served with the omelet.

Relive the fun and excitement of our July 2000 Celebration!

We are cleaning up the pan ... In 2000, CARICO of Fredericksburg constructed our eight foot pan (with ten foot handle) from over 800 pounds of stainless steel.
We have polished the pan and it is awaiting the July festivities.

The crowd loved it in 2000...More than 5000 people turned up to enjoy the festivities.

WILL WE BREAK THE RECORD IN 2010?

There will be a "blessing of the omelet" at 10:00 a.m., followed by a parade of Chevaliers (French chefs from Fréjus) and local Honorary Chevaliers (FSCA members).

History of the Giant Omelet

According to legend, when Napoleon and his army were traveling through the south of France they decided to rest for the night near the town of Bressieres.   Napoleon feasted on an omelet prepared by a local innkeeper.  The omelet was such a culinary delight that he ordered the townspeople to gather all the eggs in the village and to prepare a huge omelet for his army the next day.

From this beginning, the omelet later became a tradition to feed the poor of the village at Easter.  It has also become the symbol of a worldwide fraternity rich in friendship, tradition and cultural exchange known as the “Confrerie”.

The Giant Omelet Celebration is truly an international festival.  Each year, foreign representatives visit each Confrerie to assist with the preparation of the omelet, to experience the joy of life (joie de vivre), to share in its rich culture meet and mingle with its people and to make memories and friendships which last a lifetime.  Each celebration draws a crowd of at least 4000 people, often thousands more.

It is truly a rare and special privilege for Fredericksburg to have the opportunity to share this international experience.
