Bonjour!
From the President...

Bonjour les amis et Bonne Annee!

In these trying times it is important to recognize the value of relationships. Expanding our horizons by enjoying old and new friends, and connecting with different cultures makes for a more fulfilling and rewarding life.

This season we are approaching a new Board of Directors who promise to add enthusiasm and a wealth of interesting plans for our organization. We welcome three new members to our Board, Leigh Perret Dowd, Roy Kissinger, and David Jennings, and say good bye to two friends who have made us a surviving and exciting group, Patsy Prud'homme and Steve Beauch. Please read more about them in this newsletter.

Many fun activities for our membership are planned for 2012 and it is the French students' year to join us this summer. We are looking forward to hosting and planning a memorable experience for our Frejus visitors. If you would like to be involved please contact me! herndoncathy@gmail.com

Happy New Year!

Cathy Herndon

Recent events

The September adult trip to Frejus

This past September, 13 FSCA members left for Frejus to attend the 25th anniversary celebration of the Giant Omelette. The event was held in St. Agulf in the town park in Frejus.

Fredericksburg Sister City Chevaliers Cathy Herndon, Bill Beck, Wilbur Brown, Mandy Carr, and Sara Fartro helped prepare and serve the 14,000 egg omelette to 5000 people. They also marched in the anniversary parade and participated in a September 11 ceremony for the 10th anniversary of that event.

Other Sister City members, Susan Beck, Suzanne Willis, Don and Elsa Colt, Kathryn and Chip Willis and Catherine and David Jennings, attended pre- and post-omelette lunches and dinners.

During the celebration, the FSCA members danced to music by Philippe Rigoulot and his band (who had delighted us all 2010 with their talents at the le p'tit bal du 14 Juillet in Market Square in 2010) and listened to a musical tribute to Dalida (a famous female singer of the '60's in France) performed by Magali and Claudine, two musicians and singers that  performed at our 30th anniversary here in Fredericksburg.

Frejus/Fredericksburg president Maryse Rigoulot prepared a fabulous itinerary for the American guests which included a trip to a winery, an olive oil mill visit, an evening boat trip with the Omelette group to St. Tropez, two Historic Villa tours of St. Raphael and St. Agulf, along with the Giant Omlette 25th anniversary festivities.

President of all Frejus' Sister Cities, Andre Olivier and his artist wife Saliha, entertained us at their lovely home as well.

We thank all of the hosts for their meals and trips to exciting places; Maryse and Philippe Rigoulot, Philippe Jouan, Michel and Hilary Gras, Michelle Frances (Minush), Guy and Suzanne Sanguinet, Jean Piere and Ferrailoli and his lovely wife.

After the trip to Frejus, 7 members of the group extended their trip with a 3 night stay in Paris.

Annual meeting: November 2011

The annual meeting this past November 16th was once again a wonderful and successful evening! Lead by President Cathy Herndon, the meeting provided an opportunity for the FSCA membership to gather, remember the exciting events from the past year, and look forward to the year to come.

Many members participated during the evening.  Don and Elsa Colt were guest presenters and shared their photos and stories from the trip to Frejus in September. Abi Haymes and Carolyn Parsons presented their summer experiences with the student/adult exchange. Lori and Roy Kissinger held a French marche for members to purchase gifts for the holidays. There was also a live auction of very special items donated by our members, in particular a French language CD tutorial set from Phyllis Whitley. Bidding was exciting and we raised much needed money for our scholarships for student exchanges.

Here are some more details from the evening:

Remembering September 11th

During the meeting, Cathy Herndon shared a speech and Saliha Olivier shared a poem at the September 11th 10-year anniversary ceremony in Frejus. The text of the speech and the poem are below.

Cathy Herndon's speech:

"September 11, 2011

Do you remember what you were doing 10 years ago today? I was preparing for a field trip to Washington DC with my art students who had made a wonderful quilt for peace---

How ironic!

10 years ago, America and the world, were reminded again of how we, as a human race are not only different but very vulnerable to the beliefs and actions of each other.

As a country that celebrates the diversities of people and their ideas, that day in New York City, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania, was a "wake up call" for all of us.

The world recognized the need for understanding the importance of communication and the exploration of opportunities for practicing peaceful resolutions to conflicting issues.

As Americans in Frejus practicing in these special activities, we are allowed the opportunity for all of us to see Fraternity in motion.

So on this Historic day, we thank every one of you for gathering here to remember and honor those innocent and heroic victims of September 11, 2001. We also thank the Bombadiers here and all over the world for their dedicated and unselfish service to us all.

Fredericksburg Sister City Association"

Translation of the poem read by Saliha Olivier:

"The Twin Towers

They were beautiful

The twin towers.

Symbol and message,

A sure guardian.

They caressed the clouds,

Dream and liberty.

They have become apparitions,

Madness has destroyed them.

The vengeance of crazy, angry men,

Was meted out to two doves.

If we listened to the voice of the wise,

We would burn the arrows which kill peace.

John Holmfeld

Recently in October a dear friend and member of our organization passed away. John Holmfeld participated in most of our meetings and events and supported Sister City. He was an avid art collector and supported the Arts in many ways in our community, particularly the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts. If you wish, the family of John request memorials and expressions of sympathy be in the form of donations to the Building fund of the FCCA at 813 Sophia St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401

He will be missed.

Phyllis Whitley

On Monday, December 5th, from 5:30-8:30, Phyllis was at the CRRL Library downtown in the auditorium signing her "Barn Book"! Here is a great story of "It's a small world" and the connections we make!

Phyllis received this email:

(from Jamie Wood) "I would like to purchase your book!  Both my grandparents lived in Summers County, WV and my father still has a house there in Meadow Creek. I went to King George High School and took French with Mrs. Rose. By the way, I was in the first Sister City group that was sent to Frejus!

I went to Frejus with several people from KGHS along with the Fredericksburg choir

group and a couple friends from Colonial Beach High School also.  It was an awesome trip; our group got to meet Princess Grace!  Then my host girl, Magali Jean, came the next spring to stay with me in King George.  We actually took her to WV with us and to Pipestem. My father inherited the house there in Meadow Creek on the New River and

still have reunions there.

There is the main house, an old guest house and an old ugly coal barn on the property at the end of the gravel road after you cross the railroad tracks.  Were you from that area and that's why you decided to take pictures of barns in Summers County?

I'd like to get your book to give my father.  I live in Richmond.  I would think you probably have heard of my grandfather John E. Faulconer and maybe even knew of my mother Nancy. Johnny was not only the owner and editor of the Hinton Daily News but
a founding father of Pipestem Resort.  His portrait hangs over the registration desk in the lobby and a conference room was dedicated in his name by Gov Rockefeller just before he died.  I'm his only granddaughter and my mom was his only child.  John and his wife Tony lived on Summers St. in Hinton.....  I came to Hinton and Meadow Creek all my life growing up to see both sets of grandparents.  After my parents married, my father got a job in Dahlgren on the base so they moved to VA and later I was born, so I grew up in King George."

If you have not ordered a book yet from Phyllis orders may be placed at web site: www.barnsofsummerscounty.com

(credit card charges accepted there by PayPal)

Odile Pryor

Odile still has availabilities for French lessons.  Call her at home at 540-898-7526 and leave a message

or call the library reference desk 540-372-1144, ext 232 and leave message.

Odeile can hold  French classes at the library and she has tutored lots of students, all age levels!

Carla and Annie -FLOODS!

Carla Toselli sent some very dramatic photos of the floods in November in Frejus and surrounding areas (St. Raphael, St. Agulf, and Nice).

This was sent from Annie Duchamps: "Yes we had floodings 2 weeks ago (early November) with lots of problems around FREJUS. Once a year the storms are so strong that floodings are getting more and more frequent!!!! There are more and more buildings as well so where is water going to run????? Marius didn't go to work on the worst day because it was so dangerous that everybody had to stay home. Now the sun is coming back but lots of people have to rebuild their house..... We had a special Thanksgiving meal with the sister city and we shared nice moments..."  Please continue to keep all of them in your thoughts
