"February 19, 2011 Area West Virginia History Heroes to be honored Feb. 24 By Sarah Plummer
Register-Herald Reporter The Register-Herald
CHARLESTON
- Many individuals across the state strive to preserve, market and
research West Virginia's cultural, historical and natural resources,
each working to draw out one unique and remarkable, though sometimes
small, aspect of our state. From a total of 44 individuals
statewide, six 2011 West Virginia History Heroes from our area will be
recognized Feb. 24 at the Culture Center on the Capitol Complex in
Charleston in conjunction with West Virginia History Day at the
Legislature. West Virginia Heroes are nominated by historical,
genealogical, preservation, museum and patriotic organizations across
the state and are recognized for recent and significant contributions to
state and local history through research, interpretation, publication
or preservation. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the
State Theater at the Culture Center, but History Heroes will also be
recognized during the House of Delegates floor session.
History
Hero Phyllis Campbell Whitley, a native of Summers County now residing
in Spotsylvania, Va., was nominated by the Summers County Historical
Society for a forthcoming picture and history book, "Barns of Summers
County: West Virginia Heritage." Her book aims to preserve the
history of barns built before 1950, the people who built them and their
oral and cultural history. Whitley's work has led her down every road in Summers County. "It became a passion, and I became enthralled with the people," she said.
"I have traipsed over mountains to get pictures of barns and have
gotten close to locating most of the pre-1950s barns," she said. More information about "Barns of Summers County" can be found at www.barnsofsummerscounty.com
This
is fantastic and a wonderful endeavor of Phyllis in her "spare" time!
All profits are being donated to the local Historical Society and
Library. If you would like to reserve a book or buy a calendar you can contact Phyllis above or at acpcw@infionline.net

Cathy
Herndon will be showing her artwork in two exhibits for the month of
April. The first is a 2 person show with Johnny Johnson (they have both
had exhibits in Frejus!) at Art First Gallery with the opening 6 p.m.
to 9 p.m. on First Friday, April 1. The other exhibit is a 25th
Anniversary of Exposure Unlimited, a local art group where Cathy is a
charter member. There will be two venues. The show is called Then and Now. The Then
show is past work by each of the 10 members from over the years. It
will be held at P. Rose Gallery, across from Bill Becks' Antiques with a
talk at 7:30. The Now venue is new contemporary work of the
Exposure members at Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts in the
Frederick Gallery with a talk at 6p.m. Both have an opening of 6p.m. to

missed this one!
